    What is an Emissions Inspection?

An emissions inspection is an annual protocol performed on vehicles by trained professionals in order to monitor exhaust emissions and determine the condition of the engine or the vehicle. Not all states require emissions tests, however, over 30 states do. If you are wondering whether an emissions inspection is required by your state, there is a comprehensive list here that will tell you if your state or county requires the inspection.

Emissions inspections are fairly quick to perform and take only about 15-30 minutes to be fully complete.

    Benefits of an Emissions Inspection

There are many benefits to conducting emissions inspections. While many people may think it’s a waste of time and unnecessary, it provides important information to environmental agencies. Some of the benefits of regular emissions inspections include:

    • The emissions inspection reveals if your vehicle is producing or releasing dangerous pollutants into the air.
    • Knowing the amount of pollutants that your vehicle contributes can help cities and manufacturers reduce smog levels in the future.
    • Pollutants can cause asthma or allergies in some people so reducing the amount of pollutants that your vehicle emits can be beneficial to your health.

Though it may seem like a hassle to get your vehicle’s emissions tested every year, the results of these emissions tests are very useful to yourself and to businesses and agencies all over the country.

    Exemptions

Some people may be exempt from getting an annual emissions inspection depending on the circumstances surrounding their vehicle. Typically, brand new vehicles don’t need an inspection because they haven’t been driven very often. Some states may also exempt vehicles that have less than 5,000 miles from participating in an emissions test. In order to determine if your vehicle needs an emissions test, you will have to speak with a certified emissions inspector.
